Each season, 1,000 aspiring jazz musicians in MDCPS get an in-depth look at the behind-the-scenes workings of a Jazz Roots concert at the Arsht Center. Through an educational partnership with MDCPS, every high school jazz music student is invited to witness a real working sound check in the Knight Concert Hall, talk with internationally acclaimed jazz musicians and experience a live Jazz Roots concert — all free of charge. Throughout the program’s history, students have participated with jazz legends such as Chris Botti, Chucho Valdes, Candy Dulfer, Aaron Neville and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band to name a few.
